Astronomy - first cycle degree

First degree studies encompass 3 years and end with the bachelor of astronomy professional title.
Astronomy graduates have extensive knowledge in the field of physics based on the foundation of mathematical and natural sciences. Students can understand a rigorous description of physical phenomena, use modern measurement equipment and technical diagnostic systems. They can collect, process, and transmit information. They are fluent in English at the B2 level of the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, and a specialist language in the physical sciences.
The graduates are prepared to work in jobs related to the production, usage and maintenance of modern navigation technologies, the measurement and diagnostic technologies and communication technologies. They are prepared to work as well as in education – after finishing the teaching specialty, where they acquire full rights to teach physics after completing the second degree and obtaining a master’s degree. They have the competence necessary to operate and supervise equipment that requires basic knowledge of physics.
During their studies students learn modern computer techniques and methods, while studying the physical phenomena observed in the Universe. The scope of the courses offered reaches beyond pure astronomy and includes many specialist courses with the emphasis on computer simulations of astrophysical processes (including synthetic data generation) and the analysis of digital data from astronomical observations. The best graduates should be able to start second degree (masters) studies in the fields of astronomy, computer astrophysics, space sciences, physics, and other related natural science studies, and later the 3rd degree (PhD) studies. Many of the graduates will be able to find employment in in various companies and institutions focused on handling and analysis of digital data (big data) – these include the selected parts of the general industry, telecommunication, banking, and medicine. Our graduates are proficient with many computer techniques, they can code computer programs using various programing languages (and including programing at the operating system level), handling of the computer networking, and versatile digital data analysis.
The graduate’s general education in the fields of astrophysics, physics and mathematics proves their broad understanding of the world and enables them to utilize non standard methods of approaching various problems, which should be an asset on the job market (and especially in areas related to modern technologies). While our graduates won’t have formal IT education, their abilities will be on par with those that do, and that makes them potentially valuable candidates for IT related positions.
